Narrated Tales presents: "Noble Knight", a medieval fantasy tale.

Of all the noble knights in the kingdom of Retnec, Ruhtra was the most celebrated. He drew attention wherever he went, always mounted on his black steed, a perfect contrast to his gleaming golden armor. He was famous for always saying that his greatest skill was luck.

Ruhtra became a knight thanks to one of his many "heroic" acts. While collecting mushrooms near the river, he heard a desperate cry for help. He ran towards the plea and found a young man drowning. The boy turned out to be none other than one of the nephews of the Golden King, who could only recall waking up on the riverbank in Ruhtra's arms.

As a reward, the Golden King ordered that Ruhtra be trained to become a knight for his bravery and courage. As an apprentice, he was assigned to the powerful Telmah, who taught him everything about riding, martial arts, and swordsmanship.

One night, while returning from open-sea training, Telmah's vessel was caught in a sudden storm. Giant waves and fierce winds violently shook the ship, tossing the crew against the walls and each other. One by one, they were knocked unconscious—except for one man: Ruhtra.

The port guards of Natsnoc saw the ship approaching, steered to safety by the lone apprentice. After this incident, the Golden King, encouraged by Telmah, officially knighted Ruhtra.

The life of a knight was generally good. Ruhtra lived in the same castle as the king, ate the same food, but shared the same duties as a soldier: to protect and serve his lord’s interests, defend the castle walls, and go to war.

It was during the Battle of Tresed that Ruhtra once again proved himself remarkable. The battle was grueling, with the kingdom's enemies breaching the soldiers' defense lines and charging toward the Golden Knights, the king's personal guard.

One enemy, whose name has been lost to history, broke through the guard and charged at the Golden King, ready to drive a spear into his chest. The king, frozen in disbelief, watched his destiny unfold, a mix of rage and despair swelling within him—until, miraculously, the spear stopped. The attacker had been unseated from his horse.

The king was told that, noticing the peril, the noble knight Ruhtra charged at the assailant, striking him from the right flank and saving his liege’s life. This quick and precise action reinvigorated the Golden Army, leading to their victory. It also earned Ruhtra a promotion to the king’s personal guard, new equipment, and his beloved black steed.

However, as the years passed, Ruhtra grew less guarded with his words. One day, he confessed to the king that he had never actually learned to swim. By sheer luck, the king’s nephew had already been safely ashore when Ruhtra arrived at the river.

He also admitted that during the storm, he was the first to feel seasick and stayed conscious only because he was in the ship’s bathroom, unwell. When he finally emerged,
